About this plugin

Purpose

This plugin provides powerful tools to search through local variable collections and trace the references of variables associated with selected objects. This enables you to efficiently identify and work with variables, ensuring consistency and accuracy in your files and design systems.

Plugin built with NO external network access. Safe for organizations and enterprise usage.

Using the Plugin - Find Mode

1. Search for Variables:

1. Enter a variable name or value in the search field (case-insensitive).
2. Press Enter or click the search button to execute the search.

2. Search Process:

1. The plugin searches for the entered term through all variable collections in the local file and in connected libraries.
2. If objects are selected on the Figma canvas, the search will include variables bound to those selected objects.
3. The plugin searches not only for direct matches but also for any variables that reference other variables containing the search term.

3. View Results:

1. Matches are counted, and the associated top-level group names or selected objects are displayed.
2. Variable paths, references, and values are shown in the results.
3. If no matches are found, the plugin will display a "Matches: 0" status.

Using the Plugin - Trace Mode

1. Select an Object:

1. Select an object on your Figma canvas or a layer from within the layers panel.

2. Trace Bound Variables:

1. The plugin displays any variables bound to the selected object.
2. Variables are shown with their associated style properties, and any references to other variables are listed beneath the main variable.
3. Color variables are displayed with a visual swatch.

3. Search reference variables:

1. Tap the search button after each reference variable to search for it in variable collections of the local file or in connected libraries.
